-- Just a note: just before typing this (Monday night) I experienced my first earthquake!! At first I thought it was a huge gust of wind rattling the roof but then I realized I was rattling too! It didn’t seem a big deal to me, but then the family arose from their beds and began running for the door! Just in time for it to stop, of course. Couldn’t have been too bad, nothing fell over or anything I don’t think. Wow it’s such a strange feeling when even the solid ground beneath your feet is not stable! Wouldn’t you agree, Katy? —

As I write all is quiet in the house after quite a full day! Panda the rotweiler is outside on her chain barking it up about something and soon I’m sure all the other dogs will chime in. A gust of wind rattles the tin roof – it’s been unseasonably cold the past few days, especially at night, and windy. Even midday feels like I need a jacket, unless of course I’m standing in the sun! So, besides the occasional dog bark or car passing, or gust of wind, all is silent but my alarm clock tick-ticking. I treasure this time of the day, my me-time—I need it to soak in all that has happened each day!

It’s so hard to believe I’ve been here already for 24 days! In some ways I feel I’ve just arrived and it’s all new to me, and in others I feel it’s been so long since I’ve seen all of you and that I’ve been here at this home, my new home, forever! I’m at the point now where I’m starting to feel more comfortable because I am getting to know a few people and many many faces! I’ve been to language school now for a week, so my Spanish vocabulary is growing along with my confidence to speak it! Overall, too, everyone is quite hospitable to helping me learn, except of course for the occasional burst of laughter at how I say something, especially from my completely bilingual hermanita (little sister)! I’m on the way to making a few friends, even – several of the youth have been particularly open and welcoming to me as a friend. A lot of them, too, have a newfound respect for me after yesterday at our yard sale I brought a soccer ball out onto the driveway. Who would’ve ever thought I’d be playing a futbol game with a bunch of Guatemalan teens on hillside in the mountains, with a flat ball on a gravel driveway?! (Take note—on gravel, your feet tend to EASILY slip out from under you…)

Sunday mornings at 8 we have music classes out on the porch, with several keyboards, guitars, a bass, and some youth. Well, I should say OLDER youth. It’s a good time for me, since the language of music needs no translation! It’s a great time for me to get a jump-start learning some of the songs en Espanol they sing in worship. Also, if I get a chance here or there I am able to teach a little of the songs I know (or taught myself the night before and tried to translate). It’s still quite a slow process, though, communicating much at all, even with those most important it seems, those closest to my age. But every day is a small step closer! At least a few relationships have started. And everyone in the church, kids and adults alike, always have a warm smile to offer!

It’s such a completely different lifestyle to accustom to – but I feel for the most part I’ve slid right in. As Tom and I were discussing today (and as a friend and I discussed before I even came), it’s a lot like the early days of the Christian church. Everyone in the body works together for the whole of the church and for the ministry, and yet take it back to their own communities as well. Every day of the week many people are in and out and around, all working in their individual ways but for the same Boss, all for the glory of God. Most of the people have next to nothing, yet they give what they can for the church, and the church provides for them. Today was clothing distribution day at church, and I couldn’t even FIT in the bus to ride along driving people home, everyone’s arms were so full of clothing sacs from the ministry. Friday and Saturday we had a huge sale under the tent (and beyond!) to help clean out the warehouse for a new shipment coming soon. All day Thursday, and the days of the sale, everyone (mostly the youth) was so busy preparing and making sure everything went smoothly. And I was amazed because I didn’t even see anyone delegating, not even Tom or Elizabeth. In fact I don’t even remember the sale being announced or discussed before Thursday, yet everyone worked hard and it couldn’t have gone better! And now we have more money for the feeding programs (in over 20 villages)!

It’s all such an incredible ministry, and I’m trying my hardest to dive right in! I’m excited to say my group from Wesleyan is continuing to stay involved as well – in fact two are coming in a week to come stay and work on the hospital! And I am seeing now more and more that we are only the beginning!…
