Here I sit on the side steps at the ministry house again, the many sounds of the ministry filling the air. Well the sounds of this particular day, that is. Today is Saturday, the closest to a day of rest we have! Early this morning we took about 50 kids downtown for a festival-type thing for ministries like ours and children’s homes, etc. Corporate sponsored, of course, there was a 250-m kings cake bread roll thing to fill their tummies, as well as drinks and candy, and some clowns and balloons. The kids had a great time, I’m sure it was a totally new experience for a lot of them, going to a festival and seeing downtown! The youth went along to help out, so there were enough of them to look out for the kids to make up for my lack of Spanish skills!

Then tonight the youth are going to a church service downtown, apparently contemporary-ish and focused on youth age (maybe like 7:22?). So a lot of the youth are just hanging out here at the ministry house for this warm sunny afternoon, a few working on songs for tomorrow, a few more laughing and shrieking over on the porch about something to do with Cheryl Leigh, some of the guys just hangin out. Tom and Elizabeth were going to try to get some rest, but no such luck I bet! I’m amazed just to have a chance to sit here for a minute, and to do some laundry! It’s amazing how so much goes on here and so constantly!

During the week things are 90 mph. Or at least it seems so because people are just in and out and going every which way. There’s Ellie and Beatrice, who work in the kitchen and around the house, Elba who I think is also in the kitchen, Alfredo and Cesar who work more around the outside of the house (although Cesar works on the hospital, too). And then every weekday afternoon but Wednesday is the virtually-free medical clinic out of the office (in the house), so there’s people in & out to see the doctor. Thursday afternoon we have a dentist too, and then the feeding program for the kids from the church. There’s an informal service before the feeding, and then we dish out a few HUGE pots of beans and rice with tortillas to everyone. That’s one thing I don’t have to know Spanish to do! We have other church services Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons, and Friday nights we have sortof a Bible study/leadership training night. On Sundays all day (before the service at 3), we have several classes going on, a music class for the youth (all morning), a reading class, and a driving class. Whew.

Plus there’s always tons of errands and meetings to make, etc. Most days I’m taking Cheryl Leigh to school and back. So far I’m also doing some other miscellaneous computer stuff and etc. It’s tough to get involved socially yet, though, since communication is a major key. But everyone in the church is really nice and always at least offers a smile or a hug and a “Dios le bendiga” (God bless you). Before and after services I have been going along in the vans to the villages to transport people, so I’m getting to know the area and putting faces with the villages.

My favorite drive is to Gorillon. To get there we first pass through Santa Lucia Milpas Altas, a relatively large village with I’d say maybe 100-400 residents. The main highway to Antigua passes right through, as well as a few other narrow streets. Crossing over on one of them, we then head toward Santo Tomas Milpas Altas, past a few fields and dirt roads. At this point we’re still in the mountains, but it levels out a bit and you can see the mountains rolling off to the horizon and several of the volcanoes towering much higher above, including the active Volcan Fuego. The other night for the first time I could see the lava shooting up. Apparently they’ve had to evacuate several villages near its base!

Santo Tomas and adjacent Magdelena still have narrow paved streets, and as usual people bustling this way and that in and out of the street vendors. One of these days I’ll learn all of the turns to make to wind our way through! After squeezing through Magdelena the last bit of paved road extends straight down a huge hill. After that it becomes practically a dirt trail, not graded at all and of course no gravel, and most times barely enough room for our van and the frequent passerby on foot or bike. The road winds back up to a flatter part again, this time with cornfields on either side right up to the road. On both sides a backdrop of mountains and volcanoes unfolds again.

Finally then we reach Gorillon, which consists of two rows of dwellings in a V-shape. They are all constructed of either bare concrete block or tin walls with tin roofs. I think maybe a few are painted. More than 60-80 people couldn’t possibly live there, but we get a bus-load every time!

So, I take a deep breath and gear up for next week. I’m thinking of going half day to language school starting Monday for a week or two to give me an extra boost on this whole communication thing! I have some guitar practicing to do too…
