Greetings from Guatemala! I write to you now from the steps at the
Ministerio Mi Corazon Para Los Ninos ministry house where I am living. The quaint yet homey dwelling sits on a
mountainside with a busy winding mountain road just below. We are around 5000 feet high en los
montanas, between Guatemala City on one side (probably 2000 feet below) and
Antigua below down the other side. High
up in the mountains are only small farms and villages, the nearest are San
Lucas and Santa Lucia. The villages
mostly consist of rows of concrete block dwellings (a few rooms or less each)
with tin roofs. Occasionally, if care
or income allows, the bare concrete will be painted bright colors (but from
what I have seen this is unusual except in the city). Some of the villages are so nestled in the mountains they’re
hardly accessible by our vans.
The minute I arrived at the
ministry house I felt at home. This
house, too, is constructed mostly of concrete and tin, but it has nicely tiled
floors and can easily house groups that come (2 bunk rooms, 2 bedrooms, 2
bathrooms, and a fairly big kitchen and gathering area). Surrounding the house are a few nice
gardens, and behind the house a trail leads straight up the mountain through
the woods to the top. I haven’t yet
seen the view from there, but I’ve had a glimpse through the trees at Guatemala
City down below—breathtaking. Alongside
the house is the ministry church, Mount Zion Church of God, consisting of a
tent with some benches and a small stage.
It can seat probably 300, and we have services and ministry activities 4
days a week. Also at the house
throughout the week we have several medical clinics and food programs.
The other major part of the
ministry is in downtown Guatemala City, Zona 7. There, the ministry owns two adjoining buildings. The first is the Mary Magdalena house, set
up for housing groups as well, and will one day be aimed at ministering to the
prostitutes in the area. Our group
spent most of our time there. Unlike
the remoteness of the ministry house in the mountains, the Mary Mag house
echoes with the sounds of the city at all hours, especially fireworks the past
few days around New Years! As a group,
our favorite part of the house was the roof, a great place to hang out with a
good view of the street below and, on a clear morning, the nearest volcano
(Volcan Agua maybe?) looming above.
Adjoining the house is what will become, hopefully in the next year, a
free children’s hospital. A large part
of our group focused primarily on the construction of it while we were there,
doing mostly plumbing and masonry work (even I laid a few blocks!). Our group really captured the vision for the
hospital and got a lot of work done on it while we were here.
But alas, mis amigos from my church
in Atlanta have returned there and now it’s just me and my new adopted family,
the Allans—Tom, Elizabeth, and 6-yr-old multilingual Cheryl Leigh. Boy is she excited about having a new big
sister for a while! Of course there’s
also the rotweiler, 2 German shepherds, 2 Docksons, many fish and birds, and
several young people from the church who hang around and help out a lot. Unfortunately I can only so far communicate
with the Allans!
I’m glad we are taking it easy for
a few days so I don’t have to jump into anything too quickly. I have driven a little so far, and wow is
that scary. Tomorrow (Friday) we are
going on a short vacation for two days, so that will be an experience! It will be good to spend time getting to
know the family and whoever else goes along.
